Stone Harbor New Jersey

Stone Harbor sits on the south end of the barrier island, with Avalon to its north. The New York Times once described Stone Harbor as a place of "gleaming McMansions and elegant shops”. It is known for the beautiful beaches, wetlands, boating, restaurants, festivals and of course, 96^th Street’s charming avenue of local shops, eateries and movie theatre.

HISTORY OF STONE HARBOR

Stone Harbor was marketed as a beach town resort in the late 19^th Century. It was geared towards the affluent people of Philadelphia seeking a second home for the summers. Stone Harbor become a Borough on April 3^rd, 1914. It is said that the borough was named for an English sea captain named Stone who sought shelter from a storm in the area. In 1893 the first cottages were built from 80^th to 83^rd Streets and it wasn’t until 1907 that the dunes were leveled. The only way to get to Stone Harbor was by train through Townsends inlet until the 96^th Street highway was built in 1911and a second railroad connected Stone Harbor to Reading Railroad System in Cape May Court House.

"7 MILE ISLAND"

Originally known as “7 Mile Beach”, the Barrier Island Avalon and Stone Harbor are now referred to as “7 Mile Island”. Avalon is 4 miles and Stone Harbor is 3 miles long located on the south end of the Island starting from 80^th Street to 122^nd Street which is the southern most part of the barrier island.

Protected & Raft Beaches - Unless noted otherwise designated beaches are for swimming only. Swimming and rafting beaches are all designated beaches except 81st, 86th, 105th, 110th, 112th, and 122nd Streets.

Stone Harbor beach tags can be purchased at the beach tag office at the beach patrol building on 95^th Street & the Beach; or you can mail check prior to your arrival and can be picked up at your convenience. Stone Harbor tags are honored in Avalon.
