Sea Isle City has definitely “upped” its game. With its new restaurants, beautiful new condos and town homes and new construction of single-family homes, Sea Isle has become an island where affordable south jersey shore living is one to be proud of! We like to think of it as…. “Beautiful beaches, where history and present-day meet!” Jacki is also a Sea Isle native, growing up in Townsends Inlet., where her Sea Isle City family roots go back almost 100 years!
HISTORY OF THE ISLAND
Joseph Ludlum was the first owner of the Island purchasing the land in 1692. He used it to stock cattle and sheep. He named the island Ludlam’s Beach and divided it into three sections. John Townsend bought the south end section in 1695 and renamed it Townsend’s Inlet.
HISTORY OF SEA ISLE
Sea Isle’s main Street, Landis Avenue, is named after founder, Charles K. Landis., who purchased and renamed the island Sea Isle City in 1880. Sea Isle was originally known for commercial fishing, which began around 1890, eventually the fisherman started to build cottages for their families. The oldest building in Sea Isle is the Colonnade Inn, which still remains as an Inn. It is located on 46th Street, one block from the beach and promenade. Sea Isle officially became a borough on May 16, 1882 and just as Charles wanted, by 1885 it started to become a resort town with rooming houses, hotels and homes. In 1887, a trolley service was started between Sea Isle City and Townsend’s Inlet. This first “trolley” was actually a horse car pulled by mules. With the most popular transportation to the shore being by train. 3 railroads were eventually built: the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge and two bridges to the north, over Corson’s Inlet. In 1916 the introduction of automobiles led to decommissioning of the trolley leading to the popularity of hotels and started the favoring of private residences!
