Avalon New Jersey

Avalon is one of New Jersey’s most affluent sea shore resort towns. Its motto is “Cooler by a Mile” due to the fact
that it sits out about a mile further into the Atlantic than the rest of the barrier islands. It is home to some of the most stunning Jersey Shore luxury real estate. Beautiful Beaches, Incredible restaurants, festivals throughout the summer seasons, and charming coastal boutiques and shops one would expect at a high-end beach resort town.

HISTORY OF THE AVALON

Avalon was bought in 1887 by a company called “Seven Mile Beach”. The company then founded the settlements of Avalon on the northern half of the island at Seven Mile Beach, and Stone Harbor in the south.

The first house constructed in Avalon was known as Old Limerick, and it stood between 30th and 31st Street in modern day Avalon. The first deed given to the founding Seven Mile Beach company was to the West Jersey Railroad for a rail line running the length of the island. The deed included six plots along the streets of Avalon to be used for train stations and service buildings. After a few failed attempts to build the railroad, the railroad then refused to run the train unless there were buildings so the company constructed “sample” cottages and the Hotel Avalon to get the trains running. Soon enough trains were filled with people coming from Philadelphia to make summer memories at the Jersey Shore.

Avalon officially became a borough in 1892 and by 1893, the Seven Mile Beach Company was already advertising Avalon as a resort destination, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“7 MILE ISLAND”

Originally known as “7 Mile Beach” the Barrier Island Avalon and Stone Harbor are now referred to as “7 Mile Island”. Avalon is 4 miles long on the north end and connects to Townsends inlet and Sea Isle city via the Townsends Inlet bridge. Avalon starts at Inlet Drive and runs south to 80th Street. Stone Harbor is 3 miles long located on the south end of the barrier Island.

  • Handicap Access: Ramps: 21st, 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th and 32nd Streets. There are ramps from the boardwalk to the beach at 30th Street, to the beach at 8th & Avalon Avenue and to an observation platform and to the beach at 80th Street. Handicapped accessible bay front piers are located at 8th Street Pier at the bay side, 20th & 5th Avenue, 22nd & 6th Avenue, 23rd ,33rd, 37th, 53rd and 57th Streets.
