Cape May is the southernmost tip of New Jersey, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway and is one of the country's oldest vacation resort towns. Home to pristine beaches, fascinating architecture, commercial fishing, and the United States Coast Guard Training Center, the only Recruiting Center in the United States of America, Cape May is a special place for many reasons.

When entering Cape May, you get transported back in time. Beautiful historic Victorian homes, carriage rides, trolleys, and Bed & Breakfast Inns galore! It is home to the famous Congress Hall and Emlen Physick Estate. The town also has a love for the arts and culture. Throughout the year, there are tons of things to do and see; Theatre, live music, and festivals to enjoy, including the Exit Zero & Cape May Jazz Festivals, the annual singer-songwriter weekend; craft, collectibles, and art shows, and an abundance of culinary, wine and beer events for every palate.

Cape May is not only a summer resort town but a year-round destination. Halloween is always an eventful time of year; Book your stay at one of the many "haunted" Inn rooms, take a ghost tour walk and enjoy a night out with murder mystery dinner theatre. Cape May is also a perfect place to get into the Christmas Spirit. There is an abundance of shops, restaurants, and Inns all lit up with Christmas lights and a glorious exhibition of Christmas Trees and décor everywhere you turn.

HISTORY OF CAPE MAY

"A National Historic Landmark"

Cape May's original settlers were the Kechemeche Indians of the Lenni-Lenape Tribe and used the land primarily as a hunting ground. In the 1630s, the land was bought and developed into a hub for the fishing and whaling industry. By the late 17th Century, the English colonists' farming had been integrated, and the area became known as Cape Island.

Cape May (Cape Island at the time) started to become known as a seaside resort town around 1766, with Philadelphians flocking to the Jersey Shore Point. By 1834 it also began to attract the likes of folks New York, Baltimore, and Washington, becoming one of the finest resorts of the 20th Century. Cape Island City became Cape May City on March 9, 1869.

The early 1900s was a rollercoaster ride for this charming town, the rise and fall of distinguished hotels, and the sunken WW1 concrete ship (which remains visible at Sunset Beach). The 1940s brought about many important events; WWII, Dredging of the Coast Guard base, construction of the canal, re-commissioning of the air station, the great Atlantic Hurricane, the end of WWII in 1945, and the beginning of the US Coast Guard Training Center in 1948.

In 1962, a Nor'easter hit, destroying much of what Cape May was known for; the boardwalk, hotels and properties, the beachfront, and the convention center. Luckily, Reverend Carl McIntire purchased many Victorian properties and relocated some to save what was left. In 1963, the town's preservation and rebuilding began due to a $3.5 million grant.

The end of the 20th Century was the beginning of what we now know of Cape May, a place where past and present collide, creating this wonderfully charming resort town!
